Bak-kut-teh is soul food in Singapore, along with chicken rice. People eat it at breakfast or lunch, and it’s even something that’s enjoyed after finishing up drinking alcohol.

During my first 3 years in Singapore, Bak-kut-teh was not really my favorite local dish. That was until I came to know this place, Founder Bak Kut Teh Restaurant.

What’s special here?

What’s special here is the great punch of black pepper, which makes the soup with its intense garlic flavor further even more fantastic. They serve Bak-ku-teh with soup noodles so that guests can fully enjoy the great punchy soup.

The Chinese name for Bak-ku-teh, 肉骨茶, reads meat-born-tea, which literally explains what the dish is like. It’s a pork rib cooked in a broth of herbs and spices. Contrary to what the name suggests, it doesn’t use tea leaves. Instead, the name comes from the Chinese tea which is served with in the belief that it helps to digest the fat in this pork-laden dish.

At Founder Bak Kut Teh Restaurant, the meat is very meaty and soft, but not that oily. The Bak-ku-teh goes well served with dark soy sauce and chillies. Depending on how strong taste you like the taste, you can pour the sauce over the meat.

Again, their Bak-kut-teh soup is fantastic. You can enjoy half of the soup as it’s erved and then add the chili dark soy sauce for a different taste!

When we enjoy great meat and carbs, a bunch of vegetables is a must for healthy eating:) Order Choy Sum with Oyster Sauce (Chinese green vegetable).

The wall of the restaurant is covered in pictures of the owner and international celebrities who have visited. I honestly didn’t know all of the celebrities, but I was able to spot at least one big popular Japanese celebrity in there.

After you’ve finished the full set of Bak-kuh-teh, noodle soup, and vegetables, your stomach would be completely full. Take a 5-min walk on Balestier Road and finish up with a fresh beer at Starker.

Getting there: There is no MRT station nearby. If you’re a visitor, it’s recommended to take a taxi. All drivers know the place. It’s a 10-min drive from Orchard or a 15-20 min drive from other central areas.
